Maui Travel Guide 2025: Best Things to Do & Itinerary
Dear Traveler,
For textbook examples of tropical hedonism, you couldn’t get much lazier than on Maui. But here I was, half-a-continent away in rain-soaked West Maui, the most picture-ready I’d been in years because at Kaanapali Beach — and because I had two almost-grown teenagers who were just about too old for us and two parents who managed to keep on long enough to die and because I wanted to go somewhere beautiful with tropical fish before I die, too, maybe quicker than I’d like if all the heavy living I’ve done so far leaves its marks.
I’m going to give you a “handwritten” advice, here. I’ll share the top 10 things to do in Maui with kids and best places to stay so as not to overwhelm your family’s budget, plus the perfect itinerary not to spend all the day locked up with your kids and to have the most boring vacation in your life, with a special focus on Maui. My book is a love song, a paean, to the most beautiful Hawaiian island of them all, and one of the most primitive as well — and perhaps gut instinct was actually onto something. It will, indeed, just be a conifold brane, nasty for the most part, all sucky. I will also cover what’s new on Maui since my 2023 trip (when I, yes, took the picture) — and why it turns out that 2025 was a particularly great time to be there.
🌺 The Power of Faux Aloha: Loss, Fire, and Compassion on Maui 2023

The visuals were gut-wrenching; the quiet of Front Street, a long-time hubbub of noise and activity, was oppressive.
But at the same time, it produced something quite beautiful: resilience. Neighbors took care of neighbors; community organizations stretched their organizing muscles to mobilize their memberships to help those afflicted by the storm; even tourists — the few who managed to make it here, that is, because the overwhelming majority had flights they were not getting on — pitched in, sending money and supplies or just, “We got your back.” That wasn’t just a catch phrase, “Maui Strong,” that’s how you lived out here.
🌄 2024: The Year to Rebuild

Here I was in 2024, scorched into Maui’s landscape, being transmogrified by intention, consciously. “Regenerative travel” was and is a buzzword of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, an exhortation to visitors to come that way — a particular stripe of people who would, somehow, reconstitute themselves and leave something behind on the land. That was, to be sure, good business — “I had a foil,” as Hillenbrand says, “a house of cards in which that money was sitting” — but it was good business of another sort: It was retail, the kind of business that promises sustainability, cultural uplift, neighborliness.
₪Measures to stem the use of plastic waste, as hotels are doing more to give their staff cultural training, and are seeing many more tourists volunteering while they’re on holiday. Wasn’t our 2024 vacation not just a vacation, we’d presumed, but thus undertaken as a mission of solidarity?
🌞 Why Visit Maui in 2025?

So here we are, then, in 2025, as aalive—yes aalive—as it has been and ready, fit as all have ever been in a good, solid three years of effective comatose-ness. And so, ever so gradually, the visitors are returning, ratcheting back to something between here and where they were before 2023, but with a sense of what-happened-now to them, more distant-seeming, less stop-and-look- wow.
But it’s not a paean entirely to palm trees and beach strolls on Maui travel this year, though the footage of both is abundant. It is about the relationships, and it is about making your vacation count, and the vacation of that island you are going to count.
📅 When is the best time to visit Maui in 2025
Wondering when to go? Here’s an Error:
January to March: Ideal for spotting whales, with mild weather.
April-June: Less crowded, better prices, and the upcountry’s wildflowers in full bloom.
July and August: Peak season, and families should reserve early.
September–November: Inexpensive; warm temperatures persist.
December: The top-end resorts sparkle; book well ahead, whenever possible.
(Future-proof that one for you.) “Maui Travel Update 2025.” But before you start planning your trip to Maui, take a look at our “Maui Travel Update 2025.” And the regulations and access can change, too, especially as the boom in recovery work continues in and around Lahaina.
🧳 What to Bring on Your Maui Vacay

Packing for Maui? Don’t overthink it; pack smart:
Baggy or loose clothing (shorts, men’s button-up linen shirts, sundresses)
Toxic-free sunscreen (Hawaii is banning toxic sunscreen!)
Sweater for the cold mornings going up Haleakalā
Two swimsuits (one is always drying)
If you intend to do any hiking, then you’ll need (also d,h) some sandals with some grip.
Sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, and a water-resistant phone case
Trust me — you will thank me after watching the sunrise over the water at 10,000 feet.
🏨 Where To Stay On Maui First Visit 19.
A sampling of the best: WHERE TO STAY. Each has its own kind of vibe.
🏝 Kihei

Kihei is cheaper than other parts of Maui, making it perfect for families, digital nomads, and budget backpackers. A great spot to hunker down, with friendly local food trucks, a public beach, and a come-one-come-all vibe to rest up before riding off into the park for the day.
🌴 Wailea

Whether it’s your honeymoon, anniversary, or just life, here in Hawaii, it’s so lovely. No place like Wailea. Fancy hotels, fancy pitched-on-the-sand meals, sea water that you can see through — all to be delivered to you, fancy, post-2023, of course.
🌺 Hana

“It’s very, very remote and very, very quiet — it’s not for everyone, but if you’re a fan of nature and calm, if you’re a fan of being somewhere where it just takes forever to shut down, it’s fantastic—limited Wi-Fi; maximum beauty.
🏖 Lahaina/Kaanapali

Aptly, part of Lahaina began to reopen in late 2024. (There will also probably be some places you can go as a tourist by 2025 that you can only barely go now — the market, possibly // Florida, maybe!) // — but I’d bring and order “Maui travel restrictions 2025” with the price of your ticket to play it safe.
🏝️Maui with Kids: Kid-Friendly Things to Do in Maui – Best Things to Do on Maui!
Chasing the best Maui kids’ activities? Here’s what’s worth your time:
Molokini Crater Snorkel: Crescent-shaped reef crater.
Roof Cast: The Maui Ocean Center re-opened in 2024 and now features an exhibit on coral conservation.
Road to Hana: Waterfalls, banana bread, and a rain forest — seriously, does anyone need to know anything more?
Iao Valley State Park: A Short, Meditative Walk in a Spiritual Hawaiian Place on Maui
Sunrise Few places have a sunrise as magical as HHaleakalā’s, with the sun coming up over the ocean right in front of you, and where you could freeze your face off while you watch it.
And don’t even hear about those secret Maui, Hawaii beaches you’re not supposed to know about, those hideaways like Secret Beach Makena and Honolua Bay (where the snorkeling is mellower, incidentally).

A firm, Maui is expensive — but a firm, Maui is cheap too, if you know where to look. Here’s how:
Don’t stay in Wailea or Kaanapali — stay in Kihei or Wailuku, it’s more affordable.
Eat at a food truck: Taste offerings from Kinaole Grill, Maui Fresh Streatery, and Da Nani Pirates.
Rent a condo or Airbnb: The difference you can save from cooking your meals when on vacation can be dramatic if you’re skipping dining out.
Chill freeload style at beaches or parks: Free > expensive, always.
Don’t: Spend Your Money On Excursions (DIY The Road To Hana Or Haleakalā On The Cheap)paren
2023 was status quo, 2024 bounced back, and now, 2025 even “budget travelers” are being welcomed with open arms and bear hugs — travel responsibly, ish.
❓ Is it safe to visit Maui in 2025?
Yes—and safer than ever. After 2023, the county must also take additional steps to bolster its emergency plans, evacuation signs, and natural disaster preparedness.
That said, use your intuition and stay informed by following the news. Happy you had the opportunity to read “Maui travel update after wildfires” before traveling to West Maui. 9) The local voices matter.
📰 Maui Travel Update 2025
Here’s what’s new since 2024:
One that is still on the books: A $6 million plan to try to lure visitors back in.
Bring on the whales — it still could be the year of the whale.
Banyan Tree (Lahaina) Lahaina The banyan in Lahaina is coming back after a fire.
New walking UCUs to be headed by a local city or regional born or …
Don’t just visit—connect. Maui has… open arms to people who honor, respect, in some way, are in awe of the spirit of its hard-fought past, who would welcome its tomorrows, who essentially would serve its people well.)
✨ Closure Vibe: 2023-2025 — A Ride of Aloha

“Nobody wants to be going to Maui in 2025, that means something still. In 2023, we grieved; in 2024, we rose; and today, we dance.
Whether you’re watching the waves crash on an inner cove, diving with schools of sea turtles just off the coast of Molokini, or sitting under the stars on a rooftop with the sounds of local musicians, Maui’s magic is still — maybe even more so now.
You come for the beaches, you stay for the soul.” You believe me. And it’s simply nicer in Maui at the moment.
With heartfelt aloha,
A Fellow Traveler 🌺
